Default Front Brake Light Switch - Fixable.

- just a note here to help out a biker in need.

- the front brake light switch died on me (checked bulb , checked wiring , traced it to the switch itself).

- opened up the right switch housing (two bolts , one on top and one at bottom) , bent the metal tab holding down the switch and dug out the small metal V shaped wedge , freed the switch. The rubber boot is already torn.

- the switch is sealed and cannot be opened.

- what i did was flood the switch with WD40 , stroked the plunger many many times whilst spraying in the WD40 , and its working again. Maybe with the torn boot , dirt / water got in and blocked the contacts inside.

- walla ... working switch again. Wraped the entire switch loosely with glad-wrap , and reinstalled it.

sounds like youve fixed it. when i bought my bike i thought it would be a good idea to have the front brake lever work the brake light, when i replaced the switches and housing with chrome i found out it did, just that, like yours, it had stopped working. kinda of surprised they dont sell a replacement switch for it, maybe they do.

Default constant brake light

I just bought a 1987 FXRS, the bike runs and looks greatt. the only problem i have found so far is the brake light is constant. could this be a switch in the front and/or the rear?? and should i check wiring first?

Mine did the same thing....the brake light stayed on,and it was the front brake switch. The little bugger ws a pain in the _ ss but i replaced it. Works fine now...no more constant brake light.

A friend and I looked through the bike and found the problem. the brake lever was 1/4 inch away from throttle control. just enough that the front brake switch was not working.

I've seen a few and including my Low Rider have this problem......When you reached speeds of 45 mph, the brake light would flicker on and off. When you reached about 60+mph, the brake light would stay on constant. Of course, when you were riding slow...the brake light would go off.

What was happening, at highway speeds the wind speed was just enough to push on the brake lever activating the brake stop light switch. Seemed to be more common on the 1997, 1998, and a few 1999 models.
