Never done it before, but, hey, how hard can it be?

We have a saying down here in the south Slim - "you can't make chicken salad out of chicken s*#@"

By the way, I've not been thru CT in several years, but last time up, most quick stops, truck stops etc had the typical hotdog thing going but there was something different than anywhere I've been in the US. The hotdog buns we different. They were more like a piece of white loaf bread with the ends baked together forming a pocket, rather than like 2 heel pieces connected at the side. The only crust to them was on the edges and ends. VERY tasty and easier to keep all the goodies where they belong. And I don't recall seeing them anywhere else in New England. Is that a local bakery thing? Last one I had was in East Haven if memory serves me...

And have you ever been to Kent Furnace? I wanted to check it out but just never did... maybe I can next time up...

They're known as 'New England Style' hot dog rolls, and are made by several commercial bakeries in New England. If you go to a diner-type place and get a hot dog, they throw these rolls on the grill to toast up the sides a little. And they are considered essential to creating a classic Lobster Roll, for which they grill the rolls in butter and then stuff them with lobster meat.

You know, I've been by there many times (I live less than an hour away), riding Route 7 and the surrounding area, but I've never stopped to check it out.

YEP - THAT"S THEM!

I have no doubt New Englanders and serious about their lobster. And of course us toothless hillbillys down here are about as serious with hotdogs. One thing for sure, you never had a hotdog till it's in one of those. They sell Wonder Bread down here, even at Wally-World. Maybe I should get dressed up and flirt with the managerosaurus at the grocery store and see if she'll try to order some. Now you've made me hungry.....

Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane, guys! I used to get hot dogs on buns like those at a place called Dog 'n' Shake when I was a kid in Wichita, Kansas. They'd grill the buns on a machine with butter, and they were the best I've ever tasted by far! Makes my mouth water just thinkin' about 'em!
