i did it on my 1996 flht, if you want to retain the controls, you can do it for around 300 bux, with the biketonics kit and i purchased my sony radio off ebay, I know some people are going to the trouble of replace the entire radio harness and using a newer style radio on them bikes, but imo, the stock harley radios are poor and have no power, so its worth the upgrade to do it like i did. chad.

I changed my 1989 Ultra to take the 1998 radio. I changed the entire main and fairing wiring harness as well as the inner/outer fairing. I got most of the parts from eBay. it saved lots of money. The only things i purchased new were the wiring Harnesses. i didn't want to buy someone else's problems. When I was done, it was like a new bike.

I just repaired my factory radio. It was cheaper than any conversion. I may change out the speakers at some point.

I bought an mp3 player that plays through the stock stereo. Sounds good to me, with lots of volume. You go online and download what you want to listen to. I may also add XM radio later, as I have that in three of my vehicles.

I also mounted an XM on the bike and used the FM modulator to connect to the radio. Used the Kuryaken fuel lid mount to hold the XM.

For my 89 Ultra, I got the Biketronics kit which uses the stock radio wiring harness to retain the handlebar controls functions. I bought a Sony radio/CD player (which also has a USB port to plug in an iPod or other mp3 device) as well as new speakers. It is a simple plug and play installation. All told it did cost $500, but what a difference! Well worth it to my mind.

I upgraded the radio on my 96 EGC to a Sony model CDX-GT420U using the biketronic wiring adapter. I paid under $400 for both. I chose the sony model above because it has a USB port. I loaded up a 2 gb flash drive with MP3s and while not full, I have over 19 hours of music.
