Default So whats the going price for H-D EVO motor exchange program or do I go Ultima?

My 1985 FLHTC's motor is making some scraping type noises. Motor has about 90-95K on it, I've had top end work, new pistons new cams done 4 yrs ago approx. My local non-dealer mechanic who has worked on this bike off and on since I purchased it used in 1992 said the noise sounds like something is scraping. I'm trying to decide do I have him tear into the motor of look into the H-D exchange/ rebuild program and a new crate motor. Whats the going price for hasving a HD dealer do the exchange/ rebuild, will HD do it with a 1985 EVO motor? What are my crate options?

Back in 2002, I did the Reman for my BadBoy. I had other work done but
as I remember, it was $2195.00 for the engine and $500.00 for labor and
$100.00 for oil and misc for a total of $2795.00. I had a warranty for 12,000
miles and at 7,000 the rear head gasket blew. The shop that did the work
contacted Harley and asked if it could be covered because it was out of a year
since the job was done. They agreed because the Service Manager told me Harley
had been having problems with the engines in the Reman program blowing gaskets.
If I could do it again, I would have went with the new engine for an extra grand.
Also, if you go with Harley, check around. I did and was surprised to learn that
the cost varied by several hundred dollars.

I do my own wrenching. But, it sounds like you just ride and dont care for a "monster", go HD with the warranty or let your indi build yours. I think you'll get what you want for less than even an Ultima.. Do a search for Ultima on here and you'll find a bunch of guys who are happy with them and praise the power, but, after multiple problems. If you just want the reliability, I'd go HD. Personally, when I have to make the choice, I believe it will be an S&S build. But again, I'll be doing it all myself..

If it was me,,buy the ultima you want ,,say 120",,your bike will be up and running in a day..Take your original apart to check it out,,you have time,,not in a hurry,,and could be nothing crazy expensive...If you ever want to sell your bike you have the original motor plus a spare (120") for a project or whatever..Evo parts are fairly cheap these day and for what the factory charges to rebuild ,,,DON,T I would throw a few trick items on the rebuild..( cam,,roller rockers,,porting ect)..If you don,t have the cash for it now ,,fill with oil put in basement and enjoy the ride with the 120

I have an S&S 107 in my 1990 bike. Bought the bike new and have tinkered with it off and on ever since. The factory rebuild programme sounds expensive to me. I would think an indy (or one of the engine builders here on HDF) could probably beat the factory price AND give you a pepped up motor at the same time.

Now is probably not a good time to be doing this, as the riding season is just on us. I had some work done a couple of weeks ago at reduced winter prices, but the nice weather we have now is bringing the bikes out and filling the workshops.

Personally I wouldn't buy an Ultima at present as they seem to have too many reliability issues.

Going to go with a new 80 ci motor from Harley when I get to that point. Can get a new crate motor polished for $3,300 US add shipping and removal install.
