Default EVO Head Bolt Question

Engine experts, I got a question concerning the head bolts/studs. In the HD manual on reassembly, I think it says to lightly oil the threads. Is there a reason for using oil specifically? Can anti-seize be used on the threads instead? Better? Worse? Thanks.

I have read that it is of utmost importance to have clean threads and that lightly oiling them provides a better torque reading from your wrench. I'm guessing that anti-seize may contribute to a poor torquing sequence, especially if you use too much.

Wet versus dry torque readings are different. If the spec is for wet, then you need to torque to spec wet (lightly oiled). If the spec is dry, then you do dry. Anti-seize, while close to wet than dry, isn't going to be the same as either. There really isn't a problem with the head bolts seizing up. I'd just use the oil.

Don't forget to put a drop of oil under the head bolt where it contacts the head.

The general idea of the oil is to simply provide a "little" lubrication in order to get an accurate torque reading by eliminating the friction element. By using anti-seize, you would be adding slick, protective coating that will not dispurse like the oil will. It can very well loosen on its own over time. So, just a small amount of oil on the threads, and like John mentioned, on the bolt head is sufficient.
