If you have a factory manual it covers both 84 and 87 models, so should answer your question. According to mine the switch is mounted the same on both versions, but on the 87 it fits through the inner fairing. So if you take off the **** (which the key fits in) the inner fairing should sit over the rest of the lock. Hope that helps a little!

I'm not totally familiar with the variations among FLHT FLHS FLT models in the early-mid 80s, but sounds like you have the fork mounted gauge mount now (nacelle?) and what you're adding/installing will eliminate that alltogether. I "think" the bracket that carries all your breakers will remain and rest of it will be unused and adapted to the (new) inner fairing. I'm just guessing here...

But to get the switch out/off, put the **** in any position other than "lock" or "acc" and there is a square pin on the front of the switch housing itself, down in the gauge mount (nacelle) that you need to pull while pushing the **** down. When the pin moves out about 3/16" pull the **** off and there is a nut that secures the switch to the housing.

Hey gnafin!!!! As you should know i am intimately familiar with how it goes!!!! The switch hangs off a bracket behind the handle bars and also runs the forklock . There is 2 screws that hold fairing to bracket and then the bezel of the switch holds it too. then you put the new switch dcal on that you have to ruin EACH time you take it apart. Did you get the complete inner with all the trim around the radio and all 4 outer gauges???? '87 is a year by itself!!!! I can show you how to mount a radion in it if you would like. Mine is back together to the point you are right now if you need pics or something. I might have some of the brackets if you need.... just yell. I'll send you what I have that you need.

You can see the bracket in the picture below... it is just behind/below the bars and is silver.

The Fairing by itself will not mount to your Front end without the inner fairing used also.

The inner and outer Fairing from the 1987 will bolt right up to the triple tree on your 1984. I did it to my 1985. The only thing you will find is that the radio used from 1986 though 1988 is very hard to find. The controls from the Radio Sound radios used from 1989 to 2005 will not work. Both radios were manufactured by Radio Sound. The front panel looks like a DIN radio when mounted. But when the panel is removed, you will find it mounts with using the two bolts like the ***** used on the older radios.

I still have all of the books and I think that I have the handlebar Radio control switches too. (somewhere in my junk box)
