So, I hate my tour pack and the G/F gripes about riding with no backrest so I need to get her one. HD is ridiculous, I have to buy a sissy bar, pad, and mounting hardware all seperate to the tune of $350 bucks.
I want a low profile like a street glide but dont wanna pay $350 bucks for one. Ebay is a pain in the **** to figure out what fits etc. And none of them are sold as a package.
SO, can anyone tell me what I need to mount one, what yrs will fit, and if anybody has any other sources to find a short backrest? I even posted a craigslist ad looking for one and got zero bites.
bparsel, unfortunately it is what it is. You need something removable so HD is pretty much it. I would suggest going to some bike rides, swap meets, etc and see if you can try some of the stuff there. Don't be afraid to ask another biker if you can try what's on their bike. That way you can find out what fits. On some bikes you need to add another set of mounting points to accomadate everything. Try posting your question on the Touring section also. Hope this helps.
Thanks, Ive been to a few swap meets etc. Havent found anything. I was going to post in touring as well, just figured I would start here since it's so much easier to get an answer. I gues dropping $350 bucks for a backrest just seems ridiculous to me.
And it's a pain trying to figure out what will fit and what wont and all the necessary brackets.
See, thats what I'm wondering though. Ive been told that 97-08 accesories wont fit my bike. Yet I put on a new '08 seat, an '08 crash bar, and have some other random stuff. And it has all fit with little to no tweaking. If the backrest mounting hardware will fit it really opens up my options.
Heck, I may just try and make my own, powdercoat it and slap a pad on.
I've thought of selling the pack, but still want it for trips.
Tonight the G/F wants to go to the local bike night with me and has already said she wants the backrest on for the ride.
SO, I'll get home from work and have to spend a half hour putting all the brackets back on and then mounting the "Barbecue Grill" back on the bike.
Stinks.
I mounted a detatchable tour pac and rack to my 88 FLHTP. Everything fit perfect with no mods required. I think you'll find that a 97+ detach backrest will fit as well. Buy one off of ebay, if it doesn't fit you can always resell it. Maybe to me
