Default Ignition System Recommendations - Update

I have a trip coming up at the end of August - Illinois to the BlueRidge Parkway and back.

I have essentially rebuilt the bike since I got it in 2007, with the exception of the stock ignition system.

2 winters ago, I rebuilt the engine completely, and added SE Heads and an Andrews EV27 Cam.

Also added an S&S Super E Shorty carb.

Looking for recommendations and experiences with the various After Market ignition systems out there.

Thanks in advance!

one of the rules is, if you're going to go on a trip and you bike is running good, don't start changing things on it. save the ignition work until you are home from the trip. as far as ignitions go, i run stock ignitions on my bikes. i'm not the guy to ask about after market stuff.

Dyna 2K on mine with the Dyna module and factory pickup. I like to keep the heat away from the ignition. DTT also makes a good unitl and Jireh sells the Ultima nose cone type that is made by Dyna very inexpensively

+1 on the Ultima, but wait until after the trip, or take it with you "just in case"

Waiting until after your trip is good advice, but you're not going to the moon so if you act fast you have time to prove it works and get plenty of miles on it before your vacation.

My wife and I went to Poland from the UK in May and I have to confess I had my fingers crossed, as I hadn't followed my own advice above! There ain't many Harley dealers in Eastern Europe....

I agree with the "dont make changes before a trip"

However, the bike is running "funky"

Started about 2 weeks ago. It 'feels" like it is dropping a cylinder. Bike is sound louder, and I experience the occasional loss of power.

My mileage has dropped from a consistent 45mpg to 38mpg.

Bike feels like it is "starving" Getting more air cleaner noise etc.

I checked the gas tank filter on Saturday and it was pretty blocked with paint flakes etc. I cleaned it and checked the fuel bowl (clean)

I changed the plugs (had 15000 miles on them)

I am getting a little pinging when the motor is under load, but that is eliminated by getting back into the correct rev range.

I am basically just going through the process of elimination.

My VOES checks out when i test it, I am basically down to an intermittent failure in the elctronics module.

Bike has 63000 miles on it.

Any other suggestions?

Ah, we need to go to Plan B! Bike needs to work right and as soon as possible.

Do you have a tame indy or trusty Harley shop nearby? There is no substitute for a second pair of trained hands to identify and sort elusive things.

my 85 was running like you described. i changed everything in the ignition circuit and nothing helped. the only thing that was left to change was the ignition circuit breaker that is under the speedo/ tach. that was the problem. 15 amp circuit breaker, $10 at an auto parts store. i have 3 breakers under there so i just changed all 3. it might not hurt to change the main breaker too.
