Basically, if you can see the screen mesh, it is OK. When there is more than an 1/8" of buildup or the screen is obscured by dirt, it's time to clean it.

So for most folks the recharge kit is a pis money in the wind, I bought one. recharged once after 6k. I find it strange that they offer recharge kits and most folks never make it that far. Not doubting their system, just seems odd to me and I'm sure others that you only need to service your element once or twice for the life of the bike. Comments are welcomed.

I have used my recharge kit on both of my last two bikes and my truck that has a K&N filter. I plan to use it many more times in the future.
so , by recharging your air filter prematualy,As I have done are you defeating the purpose of the k&n filter? Meaning this is supposed to be a once every 50k deal? Not trying to start fight, just how often should you clean/recharge your k&n filter?
Or follow the manufacturers recommendations on the K&N website as has been posted above.
The idea of the filter is to not have to fart with it. This saves time and money. If you know someone with a flow bench, put a filthy one on it and take a reading. It will most likely still be better flow than a stock new one. (Last time I did this was about 7 years ago when I worked for Swift Motorcycles.) The dirtiest K&N I could lay hands on had several inches of water less resistance than a new factory filter.
Like a lot of things, it is your money. **** it up the rainpipe any way you see fit.
OK, I get the gist of it now, no sense in recharging when not necessary. Just kinda throws me off that you only have to do something twice every 100k on a harley. Not that its a bad thing.
