clutch noise
hi new guy hear so please be gentle, ok my fxstc has developed a dry wirring noise when you pull the clutch lever, it does it on lightly touching the lever ie not seperating the plates. iam waiting for a new throw out bearing as i thought try that first. but thought id check the clutch drum also.all looked ok there but there seemed about half mm -1mm play pushing the complete clutch drum in and out, is this normal. mainshaft nut is tight. the bike has a 1986 clutch arrangment.... any thoughts appreciated cheers

My 87 FLHTC made a noise like you describe. It was the throw out bearing. As for the play in the hub that does not sound right. When my bike was brand new in 87 the keyway on the shaft broke at around 500 miles. I have heard of others in those years having that happen.

hi, sorry for delay in reply been in hospital, thought id just update, after fitting new throwout bearing no better. on closer inspection , worst fear comfirmed, play in clutch basket [in and out) caused by knackerd mainshaft bearing on right hand side of gearbox. looks like a total gearbox strip. thanks for thoughts anyway
