Default Diaphragm spring adjustment

Is there a way to check the diaphragm spring adjustment? The manual says to use a straight edge against the adjustment plate and measure the distance to the compression spring with a feeler gauge but I can't figure out what they mean and there is no picture in the manual. Also, there is a blue line marked on the spring so is that an indication of where the spring should be positioned?

the blue line is a mark to tell you which spring you have. Do you have a Clymers or Harley Manual?? Year and model of Bike???

I'm looking at the Harley manual right now for 84-86 FLT/FXR Models. It says "5. See Figure 6-20. Place a straightedge..." and figure 6-20 shows a straightedge and has everything labeled as to what's what.

I saw that part. I'm trying to figure out how to get a straight edge across the plate without having to take off the primary cover. I noticed that when I pull in the clutch lever, the plates do not push out evenly. Only one side of the plates will push out.

Go to Loews and purchase a short piece of flat steel or aluminum, cut id down to the appropriate size, label it, then drill a hole in it so you can hang it up and be able to find it next time.

Or just go to Lowe's or Sears and get a 6" machinist's scale.

Humm. That doesn't sound right to me. Maybe that's your problem here. What you guys think? Broken spring?

Thats what makes me wonder if that blue line on the spring is some kind of alignment mark.
