That's a 4 speed Evo Sportster engine/tranny. It's similar to the one I had in my '89. They were built from '86-'90. Good call on the fin modification. The pushrod tubes look like some custom work, too. I'd love to see what's "under the hood".
Could be wrong on the mid 80's cylinders but the 90 and up evo Sportsters had 10 fins on the stock cyls.That motor has 8 fins left and more than a half inch of space which cutting off 2 of them would give you.

It does have a sprocket on the tranny, and if that is original, it puts it around a mid 80,s model. I don't remember for sure when Sportys went to belt.
