Hey, can timing really effect mileage? Put new Mikuni in and am running about as lean as I care to. Plugs look OK (white to tan so a little lean) Idles pretty rough until warm almost like it is missing but runs fine once warm. I have the idle jet just one turn off of all the way in (rich) otherwise idles rougher. Still getting low 30's on the highway. Doesn't seem to make sense, thought it would do better. No pinging, surging etc..... Not much else to check other than timing. Thoughts?
Go one size larger on the low speed, The idle screw shold be about two turns out. Check to ensure that the enrichner is seated all the way as that will make it run rich, causing poor mileage. Check for air leaks, set accelerator pump at .081. Also check float level as it can be changed due to rough shipping and if the level is off it can affaect the jetting. Yestiming can affect mileage, did you change it?? Hope this helps.
Hey thanks for the reply, I did check the enricher and it is OK. I did try the 25 pilot and it pretty much behaved the same way as the 20 I have in now. No intake leaks, new exhaust and seals. Haven't checked float, I should of last time I had it off. No, I haven't messed with the timing, that is next. Going to adjust the timing and live with it... Thanks.

Don't forget to check the accelerator pump rod clearance, too close and it will come in too soon and too often making for poor mileage. You should be getting about 40- 45 MPG at least. Of course it all depends on how and where you ride !!!
Check you VOES. If it is not closing, your timing would stay retarded, and knock down mileage. My 99 EVO gets around 46 to 50 mpg with a 45 pilot, and a 185 main.

I ran my bike most of this year with a bad voes then changed it and can't believe the differnce in performance and gas milage.
was that the 1989 FLHTP? I'm puttting one back into good riding condtion, had 96000km when i bought it, 103000 now :-).
I took it to an older mechanic and gave him a cheque to look it over, maybe change lifters, do anything to ensure it was ok. spent $400, new top end gaskets, lifter gasktes , etc, - he said there was so little wear everywhere (it had been running strong on synthetic when i got it from a cop who had the total bills for a complete tranny overhaul) that it was either an excellent rebuild or a new motor. only snag was preignition, lean with true duals and stock keihin, replaced compliance fitting and way too hot plugs, been running very well except some pinging if I have to use 91 octane. other wise with 94 octane all is well- big differnence in accleration with gas. wondered about voes but starts perfect, accelerates snappily, only pings going uphill at high speed with load, so i dont do that. ( like high). wonder if voes renbew would be een better. hmm. mileage about 35, i drive it aggresive.
