Default Does my carb need to be re-tuned?

Well, after years of neglect (sadly by me throughout college), I finally have been riding and slowly revitalizing my 93 flhs. I've been fiddling with my carb to get it to idle correctly at 1100rpm. It does so fine when at operating temp for a little while, before dropping down to about 700, and then eventually dieing unless I twist the throttle a little, then it goes back up to 1100rpm for about the same amount of time until dropping off again. It drops off very fast if the motor is a little below operating temp and usually dies pretty fast unless I keep giving it a twist every 15 seconds or so.

Seems to stay at 1100 for a bit longer, the longer I've been riding down the road, i.e., if I just got off the highway, it will hold rpm for about a minute before dropping off, but if I just put around a little after that, it will drop off after about 30 seconds or so.

The bike has ran this way for about 7 years now, and all carb components, hoses, etc are stock 93 components. Just trying to see what the forum thinks would be the best course of action - live with it, have it re-tuned, or get a new CV.

Also - Does anyone know if there is a text-only version of this forum? I'm deployed right now and the connection here is slower than my old dial-up was. Makes me miss my telnet days.

What carb is that? Is that the butterfly POS carb? If so, you probably need to adjust/clean out the idle mixture screw under the sealed plug thing, at a minimum. I don't know CV's.

I'd just pick up a set of intake manifold gaskets and pull the carb and intake. Then give the carb a good cleaning. nightrider.com has a good tech overview of the cv carb. I've used it for reference many times. I thought Harley got rid of the butterfly carb after 89 and went to the cv. I'm not exactly sure of the year of the change but my 92 fatboy has a cv.

edit as for the text mode... go to user cp and options and turn off all images and signatures. It should speed up. Thanks for your service supporting our freedoms.

I'v had my cv off no less than 1/2 dozen times between last year tojst last month and there's nothing to them. Take it off and check the cv slide diaphram for pin holes, clean the top all out with a carb cleaner, open up the bottom and take the jets out and give them a good cleaning and you should be good to go. Also check the voes hose for cracks and make sure its working correctly, there's differnt ways of checking them but if it doesn't hold pressure when you blow in the hose connector end its baffed.

Well, I guess I'll certainly give it a good cleaning when I get home then. I've sprayed some carb cleaner in it before but never been inside it to do some good cleaning.

Also, it is the CV carb.

Well, I took it off and had it cleaned. Finally got it back on this morning and the bike runs better than it ever has. It idles now, doesn't die on me, and even starts from cold faster now. Also helped that I changed out the spark plugs too - they were way out of tolerance, the ceramic was all chipped up - I believe the last plug change was back in 2000 or so anyway. Put some NGK's in.

Hey what do you guys recommend as far as additives or actions to take before putting it into storage next time? I'm gone for usually 2 months at a time every 2 months or so.

As I now live in an area with 4 seasons, when I put them up for the winter, I fill the tank and put in some Stabil, then ride the 4 miles home. On my bike, I then turn the gas off and run it until the carb is empty. On the EFI Sportster, I just shut it off. If it was just for 2 months, I wouldn't bother with any of it, except maybe running the carb dry.

+1 On the Stabil. Todays gas looses it's punch a lot faster than the gas of old.

I gotta admire a man who even knows what "telnet" is... Turn off all of the graphics, images, and signatures, and the text will load a lot faster.

THANK YOU for serving your country and helping to keep Americans safe! We really appreciate your sacrifice! If I ever meet you, it would be my honor to buy you a drink, soldier!
