Default Rocker box gaskets

Okay now for a stupid question. I have an 89 FLHS. The lower gasket on the rocker box is leaking. I have the top two parts off but now need to remove the third layer. The manuel says to make sure the valves on that cylinder are closed. Shouldn't there be some space between the rocker and the top of the spring. I have rotated the engine multiple times and can't get a gap. Maybe there is an easier way to do this, any ideas?

It's got hydraulic lifters, there will be no gap. Just make sure the piston is at TDC on the compression stroke. Watch the valves close as you rotate the motor. With the spark plug out you will feel or hear air being pushed out of the spark plug hole as the piston comes up . You can use a small wooden dowel or pencil to feel the piston through the spark plug hole as it gets to TDC. Just be sure you don't break the pencil off in the cylinder.

Great tip from deadhawg. I have a tommy bar from one of my socket sets that has rounded ends, about 3/8" diameter that I use. No fear of breaking it, too long to lose it, no risk of damaging the piston!

Ah, sorry about that old chap, wasn't thinking! Two nations divided by a common language....

Its a steel rod, the sort of thing one uses in the hole in the end of the front wheel axle ('spindle' for British viewers!) to stop it turning. Also supplied in some socket sets with a sliding drive square like this. Hope that helps! I have a nice Britool one, almost fifty years old, with hemi-spherical ends, which serves very nicely for this role.

Thanks for the advise. Even with hydraulic lifters I thought there would still be a slight free space.
