Default kick start?

with all the posts about trouble with clickey starters, why not add a kickstart as a backup?

is this easy, not recomended or too expensive?

im thinking of doing this on my softail, good idea?

There are a number of kits on the market with varying quality and price. I have no experience with any of them, and don't know anyone who does.

They all require a custom fabricated exhaust system to clear the kick lever and extended tranny end cover. I want a low FL style pipe, like I currently have, but the pipe would need a custom "jog" to pass under the kick lever and tranny. I lack the equipment and skill to bend and weld my own exhaust system, and lack the money to pay someone else to do it.

From the looks of your bike (if that is your bike), you'd have the same issue.

I have heard that a kickstart won't work with fuel injected models.

I had an '85 FXSB (Low Rider), last of the factory bikes, except for a few '86 Wide Glides that had both and electric starts...And and Evo with belt drive and the old Duo-Glide 4 speed frame. Fairly rare, now. I've got an '85 FXR now, that of course is electric leg only. I'm about to start looking for another '85 FXSB or 85-86 FXWG, just because they're pretty cool, and it's nice to have a couple of starting options. The kicker saved my butt a couple of times.

I had a 78 1/2 Lowrider that had both Electric and a Kicker. I only used the kicker once in awhile just to do it. Electric starter never gave me any problems. When I got my Evo it felt like something was missing. The kicker kits seemed like a lot of money and work. Then the whole quality issues. When my Evo did the click I thought about that kicker.
