Default Compensator shim

So I have a 2000 custom bike, Revtech Evo engine and tranny with I believe a mid-90s primary assembly as well. As I'm working on my primary, I replaced my starter seal since it was leaking and I'm fixing my starter engagement issues and as I was tearing down my compensator and clutch assembly I noticed that my compensator nut was loose and that it had been grinding into my primary cover. I noticed that I do not have any type of shim or offset spacer on the compensator assembly. How do I know what spacers or shims I need? I tried to understand the directions in the Softail manual that I have but it was like reading Greek to me. Can someone please explain this method to me and if I need that offset spacer or not? I have been riding my bike for years and havent noticed any issues with the primary before but since Im taking a closer look at it now it seems like things might not be right and I want to make them right. Thanks

First look insid the compensator nut and see if you have a buildup of loc-tite that is preventing the nut from going all the way in and giving you a false torque reading. Who installed the primary assembly last??? Did they torque it down properly???
To check to see if your primary chain is aligned you put a straight edge accross the inner primary and meadure in to the side of the compensator gear, then measure the same way to the matching gear on the clutch. the two measurements should be same. Jims makes a tool to do this with insted of using a straight edge and steel machinists rule or caliper, however if you are not planning on doing several I don't know is I would invest in it.
