Because that is what trashed your motor. Harley uses the INA caged cam brg. and as you found out they do go bad with tragic results. By replacing that brg. with a Torrington brg., you will not have that trouble again. I would ask the guy you are getting it from if it has had the brg. upgrade, as many of them have. The 97 motor should have the later good "B" lifters in it, but it would not hurt to look at them also when doing the cam brg. Do a search on here of EVO cam brgs., and you will see that you are not the first to have this problem. Sounds like you have a good deal though. Hope it all works out for you.
So guys, i just talked to my local shop!! THey have a motor off a 95 road king. 22,000 on it, mild cam (says the inner cam bearing has been changed) and an air breather kit on it. He says 1,700 for that motor, and for a hundred bucks he will put it on for me! I buy the oil and maybe a few clamps... Have me running by the weekend! So thats the way im going, dont have to drive two hours for the other motor, and dont have to bolt it on myself. Which is prolly a VERY good thing! lol Thanks to you all that responded, and im more than happy to keep talking Harleys! I will post some pics on here also if anyone is interested
Changing the cam brg. is not a big deal, and not that hard to do if you change the pushrods out to quick install push rods. That way you do not have to take the rocker boxes appart. On the other hand, since you are going to have the motor out anyway, it would save you $100.00 for the push rods if you just put the stock ones back in. At least you do not have the problem most of us have of having to remove the tanks to get to the rocker boxes. I am about to do this on my 99 Softail Custom as I have 27,000 miles on it. So far so good, but I am going to change it before it self destructs. I have all the tools and puller and installer now, so it is time to go get'r done.
Way to go Whiteyfiveo; Sounds like the way to go. You will have a really good motor that will last you a long time. I guess I was typing at about the same time as your last post.
Thanks Jim! Yea i shopped around just a little more and found that motor! Getting the bike there tonight after work and, Frank says he will have that baby going by Friday!! Plus he will see my old motor and tell me what he thinks about fixing the cases on mine.. Gota think about that custom chopper i may build one day! lol
