Ok EVO guys I'm thinking of treating the 89 flhtp to a new starter, I installed a new battery this summer ( not harley ) and I have problems keeping it fully charged, the starter often growls at me or clacks etc when starting up. I'm thinking it can't hur to put a new starter seeing as I don't know the history of the present starter, I installed a new 32 amp stator last fall and it does seem to be charging fine , I didn't replace the regulator I kind of wish I would hae changed the entire charging over to 38 amp. This is the decker and have many lights on the tour pack and bags.
So for those of you s that have changed youir starter what kind did you go with?

Ultima makes an affordable hi-torque starter. Most of the hi-torque starters are manufactured either in parts or completely off-shore, so price should be the deciding factor.

Thanks John Ultima was what I was leaning toward, I just seen eastern performance carry the ultima and I fired an email off to them to find out the differnce between all the starters meant for the 89 flht, they have several models that lok the same but some priced less than others.
I never use ebay, but did purchase several items from JirehCycles.com including a 1.4 kw starter about 3 years ago for maybe $110.00 with free shipping - so far it has been working OK, both with the 80" and 113" engines.

Thanks Joe, I'll take a look on therehome page although it is probably the same as on the ebay store.
Eastern Performance recommended the Alls ***** starter after I asked about the Ultima. I have no problems with Ultima products and prices are great but I chose the Alls ***** after Eastern Performance tech mentioned that clearancing the housing is possible on some applications, at the time of purchase EP also mentioned they had no warrenty claims with the Ultima so it is still a personal choice, the Alls ***** starter does reflect it's name and has whirled some compression for 5 years.
I just put in the Ultima Starter from Jireh. I opted for the crazy powerful 2.0 that was about $150 delivered. Spins the engine over like theres no plugs in it. I already had the 330 CCA glassmatt battery so power was no issue. It was a little bigger and longer than the stock starter, but I'm pretty happy with it so far.
