got rid of my 07 Dyna last year, and bought a 91 FXSTS last week .... I got into the 96 by replacing the cams and doing a few other minor upgrades, and would like to do some performance upgrades to the Evo
I don't know a whole lot about this engine... nothing really... it's foreign to me... but from what i've read and what i've heard they're pretty solid engines
it's got 30k on it
anyway, anything i should know about this engine?.... any suggested performance upgrades?
i'm not interested in racing this thing, so a big bore thing isn't for me.... just something to give it more push without breaking the bank .....maybe heads and cam?
Sounds like a cam change & head work would be right where ya want to be with it. I'm sure with 30K on it it's time for the lifters and cam bearing to be changed anyway. LOTS of good info, just use the search, sit back and read!! I've been doing it for years now!!
I bought my 1990 Evo new and the engines from that period are not suitable for boring out. Later Evos have beefed up crankcases. I stroked mine to 89 inches, also had compression raised and heads flowed, but there are experts here on HDF who reckon they can get equivilent improvements today without stroking.
So just as I would recommend with a TC, look for an engine expert and take their advice. They could flow your heads to match a suitable cam and deliver you a kit of proven parts to bolt on. Look through the site sponsors if you want ideas!
I would recomend just riding it for a year, see how you like it, then maybe do cam/head work, etc.
How does it run now? Should be fair w/30K miles.
The Evo is the best motor Harley ever made and sounds like a Harley too, not much to relate, just ride it and take care of it.
My 89 Springer was ridden for over 60K miles with very minor things done and loved EVERY mile. Only motor mod was taking the blk box off and went w/points from Carl's Speed Shop (w/good mpg 48 ave).
My 94 Evo has cam/head upgrade and Mikuni 42 and is lucky to get 32 mpg...funny my old Springer felt stronger, but was lighter too.
Congrads on having a Evo!

The EV-27 cam seems to be a very popular upgrade, especially if you bump up the compression a little, that along with new lifters, cam bearing and maybe adjustable push rods etc. might not be too expensive. However, keep in mind that for about $3600 you can buy a complete, ready to run big inch Ultima engine. The reason I write that is because we some times start adding one thing than another. You know how it works, we think while you are at it, might as well do this and maybe that and before too long the bill ends up the same. Even if you are not into racing, having 100+ pounds of torque and horsepower is nice for riding. I kept my old 80" but some guys are successful at selling them for $1500 - $2000 to offset the cost of the new big inch engine upgrade, which could make the new engine upgrade almost as economical as adding new cam, head work, pistons etc. to an 80" engine. I guess it all depends on how much you want to spend, and how much work you can do yourself.
I've already trodden the route pajoe describes! Had my original motor stroked and tuned, but that wasn't enough, so I have an S&S 107 now. Just over 100 HP/TQ at the rear wheel is still not enough....
Purely for reference purposes, the biggest you can get in without frame mods is 131ci.

Reason: Expanded.
...before i sold the dyna with the 96 i was gonna send the heads out to Deweys for some work...i think i'll do the same to the Evo, throw in a cam, change lifters while i'm at it, and throw on a nice 2 to 1... i've been talking to someone at RBracing about an LSR pipe, too
Evos respond nicely to headwork, cam change, good pipes and if you have a carb already, you are ahead in the modifiation game, the MM EFI would need a tuner and some dyno work $$$ to stay with the extra ponies.
Thanks 97bagger, but the link wouldn't load-up. Maybe try it again, here if you want. I'll love to read up on it.
I sure would like a little better mileage. I did have it dyno'ed recently and found it rich, jetted dn, helped mileage a little, but not much.
1994 80 ci evo's only made 48 fw hp (factory rating)!
Isn't that something?
