Awesome site thanks. I think two might be the answer. Thats 19 % to the rear wheel.I live in colorado and ride mountains and light to light city, would love it to roll on real hard. Only long rides i do are to sturgis, but thats only 5 1/2 hrs from the house and i am pinned anyway.

Doesn't seem to hard to change either. Gonna order sprocket and chain.

Thanks alot. I am new to this forum and very thankful for all f your help.

By going smaller you are losing mechanical advantage and the engine will crank a little harder/slower. Everything has a trade off.
If you have an electric speedometer and change the compensator, the speedometer will still be correct. If you change the tranny sprocket it will be off and a speedometer calibrator will have to be installed. Hope this helps.
So John if i drop two teeth the starter is really gonna be workin hard??

I agree with John on the 1 tooth drop for 5 speeds but with a 6 speed, the 2 tooth drop would work, I have both the 2 tooth primary change and the 30 trans gear with the 5 speed but my riding style is country roads, hills, run hard, big bike, big rider. Another gear would be ideal for my setup but still lives at 65 mph but as other mentioned, consider your riding style, engine output but if you like to accellerate, the 2 tooth drop is your choice.

Some nice calculators on that site 96Roadking.

Rmuller, I checked your stock 1 to 1 final drive ratio and at 2.92, 2 teeth change will put you at 3.17 1 to 1 ratio which is stock range on a big bike, you would still be in good shape at interstate speeds with a 5 speed alone the OD 6 speed.
Going to have to rely on John's experiance on the stock starter load, might be a good time to put a nice starter in when removing the clutch basket to install the primary chain but we are good at spending other peoples money.
Let us know of your results!

Yes it will be working harder as it will lose mechanical advantage and could give you some trouble, either now or later. You don't gwt anything for free, if you reduce the gear ratio by 19% the starter will have to work taht much harder. The tranny sprocket does not do that.

Let's step back for a moment chaps! Rmuller, sounds as if your bike has stock gearing, except the addition of sixth gear. In other words, your fifth is the same as a stock top gear for a five-speed box. Adding sixth significantly increases overall gearing.

When your bike was built, it already had very high gearing, to help it meet noise emissions regulations. Sixth gear has just made that problem yet worst. On my 2003 Dyna I have replaced the stock 25T compensator with a 21T SE kit, which is the same as the 19% you mention. The bike rides just great! Theoretical top speed at peak rpm on stock gearing was around 140mph, it is now around 120mph, which is much more sensible. The bike is stock with stage 1 mods and the starter has never hinted that it has a problem!

Theoretical top speed of your bike in sixth is approx 140/.86, in other words over 160mph. That is a crippling level of gearing and will kill performance. If you chose the 19% option, in other words a 21T compensator, sixth will give you a theoretical top speed of around 136mph, while fifth will be similar to my 120mph. You will get substantially increased performance, while still having a pretty relaxing ride in sixth.

I suggest you leave the belt drive alone, as making changes there as well adds to the cost. You will need a shorter chain to go with your smaller compensator, but Baker may sell that as part of their package. Harley has an SE kit that does the same thing and includes both compensator and matching chain.

Ok, Well i just ordered a set of 12" mx tbars. That was 276.
Next thing ill buy is a 2 up danny grey seat. Or maybe something on ebay. Badlander style.
Than the primary gear. Working on changing apperance to more modern and agressive. have 16" carlini apes on it now. Just bored of the relaxed look and feel.
