Ok after further reading in my Clymer harley-davidson flh 84-98 manual on page 337-338 it says for trap door bearings snap rings should be installed with sharp edge/flat side faceing away from bearing ( because of direction of thrust off mainshaft rotation )
and on page 340 it says install main shaft big bearing snap ring sharp edge toward bearing. In the harley 1984- 1990 flt service manual I can't find any reference at all to which way the snap rings should face then again this service manual is I guess for mechanics that do this job every day and are expected to know the specifics, strange.
On another note after reveiwing my 5 speed disassemble reassembly video maunal it shows and says to put flat edge toward trap door bearing and mainshaft bearing, which kind of makes scence because the mainshaft bearing snap ring is so heavy duty and takes a great amount of effort even to take it out with the snap ring pliers.
All other snap ring applications from inner primary out do not mention which way snap rings should be placed in the Clymer manual.

The direction of the snap rings is not mentioned in the `85-`90 FX/Softail manual either. I`ve always done it the way I have done it on Jet Engines for the past 36 years, squared shoulder out...
After a bit more reading through the manual where snap rings are used I couldn't find any other refernce to which way a snap ring needs to be installed. I'm thinking the trap door and the big main bearing are referred to because of the constant spinning of the shafts. I had a closer look at the old snap rings and they also show signs of the flat side being against the bearing.
Is the evo section turning into a pissing contest?
No just a place for discussion lots of different views here.
By the way I just came in from installing the counter shaft bearing and big mainshaft bearing, went like clockwork, from the freezer in the shop to the bike.
Just have to do the 2 needle bearings in the 5th gear.

OP got some very bad advice.
I corrected it.
OP is now realising that I am right.
