I am rebuilding an 80'' evo. Some say port and flow the heads, 10:1 comp. pistons, and use the wood w8 came which has a .590 lift.
Others say that I can’t run that set up on Texas gas without perfect tuning if then.
I am going to port and flow the heads, 10:1 pistons so what cams would be recommended to use with Texas gas and that won't be a pain in the butt to tune and that will have power and reliability. I am using the dyno 2000i ignition.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
Got to know the carb set up{ jets} The one thing I'd go with in single fire ignition, thunderjet carb tuner would be a big help with Texes gas, and on a evo it will give the best all around performence. Most gas has ethanol and high compression engines dont do well. The people I know that got hot rods {cars& bikes} use agg gas, from a farm coop, no ethanol, but they dont do alot of long rides,
What you look for in your case is cam intake closing, other numbers are vital but the intake closing controls the cylinder pressure, cams in the 38-40 range are compression builders and can be troublesome with high compression and need to be perfect.
The Woods 8 is a 47 intake closing and moderate duration so it will let some "air" out of the cylinder, relieve cylinder pressure and can live at lower octane but if you have lean afr's, a bolt in cam will detonate at 10-1 in Texas heat.
Ok, my opinion, the Woods 8 will need detailed attention to installation setup and will need to set the lifters deeper to control the noise that the design produces, very strong cams but precision is needed. Any 10-1 motor in heat will need the air-fuel-ratio set correct or a tad rich but a 10-1 Woods 8 will work and be reliable but if your looking for a less tedious installation cam, V-thunders are good ones. The downside of the .590 lift is roller rockers should be installed to reduce valve train/guide wear but big dollars and my take on aggressive Woods cams is they are hard on lifters and will make a weak lifter show quickly but if you like power, there is always a trade off.
I run a Woods W6H (40 intake) in a 10-1 big bike and the Ultima version of your ignition (3rd curve setting), I have my afr's properly set, pull alot of weight and run hard in 90 degree heat, that is my reasons why I believe the Woods 8 with lower octane will live in Texa and I'm assuming a light bike but you need correct afr's and can do it yourself.

1997 bagger has you on the right path, the first question is, what kinda bike is this going in? also, if your worried about shitty fuel, pick a cam with a tight lsa, and alot overlap, it will bleed off cylinder pressure and allow you to rum even risky pump gas, secondly, i hate woods cams, hate, they are noisy and square, and you can make the same power or more with a quieter camshaft, and they are half the price of woods cams, only my opinion tho,

...don't sugar coat it...tell us how you really feel....
My 98 Ultra ( fuelie,) ran ported heads, Hi Hlow AC, EVL 3030 Comp Cam, Power Commander, true dual exhaust with SuperTrapp mufflers successfully up and down the East coast a few years back. Sold her at 65,000 miles with no problems. Hope that helps.
