Maybe I'm completely dumb but don't HD's have a reserve on the petcock? Looking at the posts here it seems like they simply "run out". Surely that's not the case.
I've always used the odometer as my fuel gauge safe in the knowledge that I've got something left if the odometer method goes wrong. Thankfully until now it's never caught me out.

Billy,
You're plainly one of the brightest on HDF - you've worked out something many fellow members have no clue about. We need a new class of membership for those of us who can manage a tank of gas and not run out!
You are correct sir. However under his screen name is says 2010 Dyna. So the comment came from a person with a Fuel Injection bike which has no reserve. Only an idiot light or fuel light. So I guess his was not idiot proof.
Wow. That's incredible. So fuel injected bikes don't have a reserve?!? I'm sure there's some kind of technical reason and fuel injection isn't my bag so you'll have to excuse my ignorance, but what's the logic behind that?
Do you really not understand the difference between fuel injection and carburetion?.

My '85, which I bought in 2009, is the first bike I've ever had with a gas gauge. I use it as a loose guide. Been riding since 1972. Last time I ran out of gas was in June of 1979 in Bemidji, MN on my '78 Triumph Bonneville. I've probably hit reserve no more than 4 or 5 times during the years. I set my trip odometer and stop for gas sooner than I have to. Works for me. Haven't been stranded with an empty tank in 32 years!
