Default Okay dumb question

I am about to pick up my 97 softail and I have a question. Now I could care less about a fuel gauge BUT when did they start putting them on softails? I know the EVO dyna's had then. Does it have to do with the softails not going to a single tank until 2000? Sorry kinda bored so I chose to ask a dumb question.

"Now I could care less about a fuel gauge"
Your thought will change when your out of gas along side a busy 8 lane highway or a dark country rode with noone in sight for 10 miles, "Damn I thought I got gas 20 miles ago"

GET A FUEL GAUGE! I RAN OUT TWICE WITH ONE!

PLUS LOOK AT YOUR AVATOR, THATS WHAT YOUR DATE WILL BE DOING WHEN YOU RUN OUT OF GAS, LOL

Yes... single tank twin cams got the fuel gauge.

And be sure to fill both sides with gas on an evo. Left side cap is reverse thread.

Use your trip and don't run on reserve all the time..

Anybody that runs out of gas deserves to walk. Keeping gas in the tank and management of mileage driven is part of operator responsibility.

Should be part of primary school arithmetic! You have a 3 gallon tank and can do umpteen miles per gallon, so......

Amen thank you.

And anyone with harley gas gauges know they suck and should be relied on. My reason for the question was to understand if the bike had been tampered with.

If it is any consolation the topic of fuel guages and warning lights excercises even the owners of Harley's latest and finest! As a subject it comes up almost as often as oils. The fuel level sender can be adjusted to give more agreeable results, by simply bending the wire arm of the float. They really are as simple as that.

Yes you can "adjust" them. However, due to the fact that the tank has a rounded profile it is impossible to make it read exactly throughout the entire range. If you want your gauge to be more accurate take your tank off and have a big square tank made!!! Or you can bore two holes in the side of your tank and put some hose barbs and some hose on it and have a "sight Gauge". Then add fuel one gallon at a time, marking it each time.
Personally i think learning to live with your gauge is easier!!

Wow, how have I survived for the past 40 years without a fuel gauge?

Never had a bike with a gas gauge, you see, in the old days (that`s funny) we had a reserve on the petcock so we would know when we were getting low even if we were not paying attention to how many miles were ridden since last fuel stop.

I would think running out once would have been lesson enough...

In the meantime we have been spoiled, with both a reserve and guage on my Glide! In addition, bikes have had a odometer since Noah was a boy and a trip-meter since not long after, so that is four devices that can assist in 'fuel management'. Any one of those should suffice, backed up by a healthy sense of survival.
