I've got the same bike as the OP. I don't have a washer on mine. My plug also threads pretty deeply into the primary. Not leaking though.

FWIW, my 96 FLHR had a "leak from the primary drain plug" as well. I ended up replacing the inner primary seals, still leaked. When I took a good look at the derby cover, it was warped. Replaced the "HD Logo" one with the funky gasket with a plain one from Drag Specialties, STILL leaking!

I ended up using a little gasket sealant around the derby gasket and now - dry as a bone.

Just sayin', if you changed the fluid, you might want to check that derby cover, its gasket, and maybe try a little goop on there and see what happens.

Mine is a pipe plug, 1/8" NPT. Very loose fit, teflon tape worked for mine.

Thanks everyone! This morning I went and picked up a can of industrial high pressure thread sealant. It is rated for petroleum so I think it will handle the low pressure environment of the primary. I will give it a shot Saturday and let you know how I fare.

The plug is pipe thread which is tapered. The problem a lot of riders have when they do their own maintenance is they tend to overtighten most pieces. Originally the plug is supposed to stick out 1/8". However when the plug is overtightened, because it tapers it stretches the hole out and can even crack the primary.. Try putting 4 or 5 wraps of a good teflon tape around the plug and just put it in snug. Remember it is not a head bolt. Hope this helps
