Default Clutch not disengaging

Got bike running (finally thanks to all with starter prob) Now have a clutch problem. This one has an early 84 basket. 10 springs and 3 retainer nuts with one slot in the nut to lock it every half turn. Adjusted the clutch upon install and pulled in lever (real tight) and no disengage. Thought the plates were stuck together and put bike in gear pulled in clutch and rocked it no luck. Unhooked plug wires and used starter to roll it with clutch pulled in still no luck. Springs are compressed all way (1 1/32" plate to plate) Should the springs be completely compressed? Shouldn't hurt to back the 3 nuts off 1/2 turn or 1 turn should it? Thanks in advance for any info.

There are several reasons the 1 1/32 doesn't work out...especially if any aftermarket parts are involved. The clutch cannot work with springs compressed. Back off nuts till the clutch will operate...continue to back off nuts till the clutch slips...then tighten nuts 1/2 turn at time till clutch holds...do not tighten any more that it takes to eliminate slippage.

That's what it was. I was going by the rule of thumb 1 1/32" plate to plate. Was 1 1/2 turns too tight. Thanks ya'll.
