Do you have one of these? Hard to get set-up correctly without one.

my buddy does, he was a mechanic, good on older bikes, works same place as me now. He thought maybe it was the shifter fork/forks until I took the shifter to him. He suggested changing the cam, thats when I found the other problems. Right now, the problem is in the shifter, its just not shifting. The shift shaft should be here today or tomorrow, I'll swap it out this weekend.

My shaft and seals (cant buy one from VTWin, 5 in a pack), but they ship faster than JP Cycles, who actually get some of their parts from V Twin. I'll get out to the shed saturday and disamble one more time. One thing about it, it gets faster every time. OHHHHHHHHHhhh, where can I find a good set of battery cables for my bike, 1985 FXWG? Ive put a Big Boar battery, new high torque starter, figure I'll give it all the juice it needs to get this thing going. Its just a stock Evo, but just figured Id put it on there.

Ive got a lot of my parts from Jireh and Midwest. Was talking to a bud yesterday, Advance sells 2 guage battery cable for $1,89 a foot, as well as the ends. A little silicone and some shrink wrap tubing on the ends should make them waterproof as well. The Sumax wires were what I was looking at, but would have to buy those seperate, at over $60 for the 3 wires. Thats not that bad of a price, but, Im trying to save a dollar when I can. Guess I better get moving, its saturday morning and have to start pulling the bike apart again. Thanks for everyones help

Joy again for sure. The shift shaft was bent inside the top, almost an 8th of an inch, could see it just looking at it. If anyone else does this to an 85-86 rotary top, the seal for that shaft is different than 74-84, its smaller. When ordering everything else, cam assembly and such, its 79-84 for parts, but the seal is 85 and 86. Had to head for the local dealer, luckily they had it. Got the top back on the bike, rolls and shifts into every gear with no problem, feels better than when I bought the bike. Didnt realize how bad the shifter had worn out, but there was a spring broken for the pawl return, replaced all of the springs in there. I'll get it together tomorrow and take her for a spin. I sorta feel bad about cussing the old gal now, hope she wasnt listening.

On the cables, at the better electronics stores and at NAPA you can get shrink wrap tubing that has a heat activated epoxy in it. This is the stuff we use on the bikes as it is waterproof.

On the tranny, this is like most of the stuff we ride. It slowly wears and get worse but we don't notice it. I've ridden customers bikes with similar problems and they never noticed it. After the repairs they have a big smile just as you have now. The guys that I ride with are always swapping bikes and asking their buddies, "what do you think???" A lot of problems are nipped in the bud that way. Of course you need to trust your buddy, most of these guys are long time riders and motor-heads.
