It finally stopped raining here so I take the bike out. My right pipe is rattling a little so I stop home to tighten it up. I have the saddlebags off both sides. Figure will give all the bolts the once over. Getting up I bump the bike. The ratchet sitting on the seat falls perfectly onto the battery + terminal and grounds to the frame and starts sparking. I jump and whack it off. It's so hot it burned my finger. Everything is dead. Check the battery voltage its like 2.3 volts. It slowly is coming back up. I figure I cooked the battery at least. Do you guys think anything else cooked? I am going to buy a new battery tomorrow. Checked the circuit breakers for continuity. ( don't have another battery handy). They all seem ok. Now it up to 10.1 volts just sitting with no charger. Thanks for any help.
Naw. You just fried the battery. Put a new one in and you'll be OK.
I bought a new batt today. I got 2.5 years out of the $150 HD glass mat battery. I bought a $50 wally world conventional battery. I usually get a year from them. Sometimes 2.
It might still work, I have seen a similar situation with a 120CU S&S motor that had no compression releases.....took 6 hours to cool down enough to touch but was fine afterwards.
Thanks guys I feel better. I let the battery sit over night and tried putting it on charge this morning. It will only come up to 11 volts. Off to get a new one. Its 3 years old, 5/08 sticker on it. I was a little leery on if it was going to last the season anyhow. I won't be setting wrenches on the seat anymore. Thanks again
I agree with you Matt. It came up to 11.1 volts but will not charge anymore. Even if it would how could I trust it? Being 3 years old I am just going to get a new one. Thanks.
Picked up a battery today. Put it in and everythings fine. Bought an Extreme AGM battery for 85.00. Yeah no more tools on the seat when battery exposed.
Buddy and i was working on his boat wrench fell across battery posts. Battery exploded in our faces. Jumped into the water to get the acid off. No more tools around battery for me.
