Bike stops running above 60 mph

A friends 1990 FXR stops running above 60 mph. Pull over and let it sit for a short time and it will restart. You can ride as long as you don't go over 60 or it will shut down again. Carbed bike and thinking it might be an electrical issue. Any help would be apprecitated Thanks

I agree that this is likely an electrical issue. Possibly a loose ground somewhere, but more likely the system hot wire (not the one to the starter) is coming off the positive post of the battery. Another possibilty is a mis-set ignition rev limiter.

Check the wire coming off the bottom of the cone. They break there between the cone and the frame and you'll intermittently get no ignition signal/no spark.

Can your friend get the bike to shut down in a lower gear at the same approx RPM's? Sounds like it's at or above a certain RPM, would suggest maybe vacuum related.

Check the simple stuff first!!!!!!!!!! Get a flashlight and look at the screen on the petcock...they have been known to give the symptoms you describe if clogged.

Fuel tank vent???? If not then electrical, pickup, coil or ignition module. Next time it stops check for spark, or take the air cleaner cover off and look for fuel.

Loosen up the gas cap a little and run it hard, that will check the tank vents. If it dies again check the petcock screen and make sure gas is getting to the carb-as mentioned. Loose wires can be loose at anyspeed and you still need to check them but if it's not fuel related I'd look at the pickup, coil and ignition modual.
