ok, ima dummy, let the repair maual go with the last bike i sold. how does one go about tightening the bolts that hold the carb to the intake with all that crap thats in the "V" of the motor? or am i looking at things all wrong???
heeeeeeeeeeeellllppppp
What kind of carb you got? An S&S will tighten from the left side through the V and you may have to remove the horn or the coil to get to them. All others slip on and tighten on the right side with the mount to the engine. You may need a new rubber seal if it still leaking. They break down real easy due to the heat between the cylinders. S&S has an O-ring on the carb but you can buy a gasket for it. I used a gasket and some indian head gasket shellac on my S&S on my sporty and never had a leak there.
the carb has no identifying marks on it, and the only external adjustment it has is idle speed.. the carb bolts to the mani from the choke **** side, but theres so much crap in there, it looks like youd have to remove a motormount and everything to get to it. and i dont even know what size it is. arrrgggg!!!!
What kind of carb? If it bolts from the choke side that means it is not a CV since a CV just slips into the manifold (as mentioned above). An S&S does bolt on from the left side but does not have a choke **** but an enricher on the top of the breather. So if your carb has a choke **** on the left side and bolts on I have no idea. Mikuni maybe?
Maybe take the breather off and take a pic and we can help more.
Actually after looking in your gallery it appears you have a stock CV on there. So I don't understand why you are trying to tighten from that left/choke side. A stocker slides into the rubber boot (be sure to check if it is dry rotted or worn as mentioned above). After that the back plate for the breather bolts to the carb body and then the back plate bolts to the heads for the vents.
The carb is bolted with two 1/2" bolts (maybe 7/16") to the Y manifold.
I use a 1/4" drive with a very long extension .... and a flashlight. You can reach through from the left side next to the choke and the horn area, and slide the socket with the extension all the way through on my bike.
The other route is to loosen the clamps on the rubber boots attached to the Y manifold, and wiggle it out to adjust the bolts holding the carb and the manifold together. But that often leads to the need for new seals to avoid an intake leak.
its definately not a CV carb, wish it was ( anyone got a good one they wanna sell?)
ill have to try the 1/4 in. drive, ive tried 3/8s drive with a swivel, and just cant get in there.i know its not tight enough, cuz when i run the carb cleaner over it, the idle changes, so shes gotta be leaking. the bike has never run like i know it should, had sat at least a year before i bought it. ive cleaned the carb (mounted)and ran seafoam, but it still seems lean, and generally isnt smooth like my last Evo.
Check Ebay for CVs. They generally go for $75-$100. I was looking about a week ago because my Qwiksilver was acting up but I got it fixed. Could it be a Weber(sp) Does it have an American flag on it? if so it's an Edelbrock. The Qwiksilver II can use the CV mounting bracket so the Performer also could but they slip on as well as the Cv. And they have a choke cable. I do believe Rev-Tech had a carb years ago that bolted through like an S&S. Not sure though.
