You're just not gonna get a whole lot more out of the motor by throwing a thousand dollars at it. Can you improve it some, definitely. Will it go from an underpowered sled to a rocket, not even close. Real torque and thereby horsepower gains come from a well planned combination of modifications. Everything needs to be working together to see any real gain. Everything else is just little tweaks. It doesn't do any good to put a monster cam in if your engine can't breath in or expel the extra fuel. This means better heads. Then with your higher lift, longer duration cam, you'll want higher compression pistons to get your adjusted, real compression back up to what it used to be. And the list goes on. The next real step is a true Stage II, but that's way over $1K.

That said, the most bang for your buck would probably be to put a better cam to start with. Also get rid of the drag pipes unless you spend all your time above 3800 rpm. Power cones or not, there's a huge flat spot in your torque curve between around 2200 and 3500 rpm and that's probably where you spend most of your time on the bike. The power cones probably don't even work as well as the trick of a bolt with a washer welded to it on the inside of your pipe. Finally, take it to the dyno and get everything dialed in. Don't bother changing your carb. What's on there can feed the motor you have more than it can take in AND it usually provides better economy than the other carbs. An ignition module may or may not help with the current setup. The only gains you'll get are from a different advance curve and from changing the rev limiter provided your engine is set up to hit the higher RPMs.

Might be, the biggest performance gain you could get for under 1K would be to change your sprockets and fix your pipes

I had a 97 fat boy with v&h shortshots , jetted cv carb, and andrews ev 27 cam . it ran a lil better than a twin cam 88 with stage 1 kit. Hope that helps

I just put an EV27 in my bike and I am pleased with it. Next on my list is a little headwork and maybe higher compression pistons. But I am going to work with a reputable shop to help like hillsidecycle.com. Like mentioned above you can't just buy different parts and bolt them on. Well you can but it all needs to work together. I have the know how to bolt it on but not how to match every thing up. Maybe you can hook up with a shop like that and just talk to them with your budget and what you want.

I did the S&S style intake, Thunder-slide carb kit, Screamin Eagle ignition, drag pipes with torque cones and the infamous EV27. I'm pretty darn impressed. A hell of a lot more power than stock. Even more could be squeezed out of her with a good 2:1 exhaust, but I prefer chrome duals.

I reckon an EV27 cam will do you just fine, but you really must fit a decent exhaust system! Cam, gaskets, exhaust and dyno tune may blow your budget, but I suggest is the minimum you should consider. Once set up I reckon you will be very happy with the improvements.

Pretty well any set of custom pipes that don't have proper mufflers is out. I recently fitted a SuperMeg 2-into-1 and was surprised how much torque I picked up around 3,000rpm, compared with the previous true-duals. They make several versions for the different models.

Don't forget adjustable pushrods while you're down there changing out the cam. Dyna 2000 ignition and coil kit too.

Go with EV-27 cam,Stock exhaust with plug removed from mufflers or cycle shack muffler pipes,CV carb with Screamin Eagle A/C and a 45 slow jet.If you don`t mind pulling gastanks
you can use stock pushrods because the cam base circle is the same, then you just torque
down rockers like factory and your valves are adjusted.I would use the money saved on the
pushrods to buy a steel breather gear. I`ve done this quite a few times and I`ve found a
broken tooth on the plastic gear more than once.Last is the ignition,You can start laughing
now but I still use Blue Streak 40,000 volt coil and points in all of my bikes except one only because I can`t retard the spark fast enough with the magnacharger, that one I use a crane HI-4.If you go stk. exh. and p/rods your stk. ign. your looking at around $450
