Default 92 flhtc, 49 mpg

Just filled my 92 Electra GLide Classic up for the third time, just got it a month ago. 21,000 total miles on the bike. Stock machine, no special electronics, exhaust or air filter. Consistently 49 MPG, driving a mix of stop and go city, highway 45 to 55mph, and expressway 65 to 70 mph. Never pure cruising. My friends don't believe I'm getting 49MPG. They all say I should be in the 40MPG range.
What are others getting with similar bikes? Is mine abnormally high?

At the speeds your talking, thats not unusual. Speed up and the milage will drop a tad. Beat on it and the milage will drop. Drive normal and your good. Just to be sure, check your ODO on some highway mile markers, then tell the haters to get bent.

Not surprising at all. My '94 Heritage Softail regularly averaged 50 MPG while being "driven like I owned it". That was with the stock CV carb with a #45 slow jet/165 main jet.

Back in '02 I allowed the dealer's shop to talk me into a Mikuni HSR42 to try to tame the rebuilt motor that didn't want to cold start. That carb cost me a lot of fuel economy. Even with adjustments and lean jetting, I'm only averaging 45 MPG now. How much of this might be due to the 10% ethanol fuel, I don't know.

My '96 cop bike is 100% stock. The best mileage I have gotten with the bike is 45 MPG. That's with 40 psi in the rear and 38 psi in the front tire. I go about 340lbs so that may be why i don't get 49 mpg.,,

Sounds like you're right in the ballpark, my 90 fxrs-sp got right at 50 mpg on the flood run. Not a whole lotta highway miles and puttin through all the small towns. I think some depends on how you ride, talked with folks new to hd from riceburners and they, for some odd reason have a hard time letting the motor do the work, ie: you don't have to be on the pipe all the time to ride a harley. Just a thought.
Could be to that your motor is in a really good state of tune too.

I can second that comment about the Mikuni, I'm doin 32 to 40 mph, although there aren't any flat or straight roads. I need to learn how to adjust for altitude.. I go from 1000 ft to 8000 ft elevation. I live at 4000 ft.. seems like thus could be through me off a bit.. any one else see this ?

Almost everything is stock. I'm getting from 42-52 MPG depends on riding style.

I have a Mikuni carb as well on my 95 Ultra and on a couple occassions I have got in the upper 40s trying real hard to be easy on the throttle and running 55-60 mph.On average I get 39-40 pretty consistently running 70-80mph.on a trip with me (280lbs)and my wife (140) and our gear.If I get out ripping around with the guys and get on it alot it drops to about 29-32mpg.
