OK so I'm wanting to change fluids in the new-to-me '96 FLHR. Primary drain plug, no problem. Engine oil and trans? Not so much. Yes, I have the shop manual but other than a vague reference to an arrow pointing to the underside of the bike (right side engine oil, left side trans) I can't seem to find the obvious. Granted I'm half blind and got Southern humidity sweat in my eyes. Guess that is one of those things documented in the Owner's Manual (yea right).
Figure I'll replace my plugs, change the headlight bulb, and adjust my bars while I wait for you guys to get back form riding and help a new guy out.
Thanks in advance, I could never get by without you guys and this board.
The engine oil is in the tank under your righthand side cover. There is also an oil filter you should change, either under the transmission, or in front of the crankcases (it moved location in the early 90s). The transmission drain plug is underneath, but take care, as there is another screw head under there that should NOT be moved! If you have the owners manual that should tell you, otherwise you'll find the factory service manual a jolly good read and worthwhile! You may find the owners manual is accessible on Harley's website, but will have to buy the service book I'm afraid.
Take care with the primary drain plug as it is a tapered thread, so tighten gently!

Reason: Added para.
See if you can find your owners manual here. I've got two Harleys and a Buell and their owners manuals have the things in them that you are looking for.
So... that's what I get for listening to a Brit on American Independence Day, eh?
Found them - I used the parts book. Engine oil in the front of the oil tank, trans on the right side of the oil tank. What had me going was the large size of the plugs.

Job done.
You've obviously been distracted by trying to party and do maintenance at the same time!
