Default Back again and have some questions

Hey folks, I've been gone for quite a while - too much to do and too little time - but finally remembered my password and got back into the site today. Good to see some of the same players still around.

I haven't been riding too much because it is so crazy hot and humid. Bike is still running strong at 48k but I have a couple questions. Mine is an Ultra Classic, 1990, and it sure makes a lot of noises. I got the bike with 28k on it and I can't say anthing has changed in the noise department. But, I am wondering if I need to go in and adjust the valves? No idea why I think I have to, it runs fine, pulls strong, still gets 42 mpg - no complaints really - except there are just a lot of clicks and ticks and other such noises. What's the scoop on valve adjustments?

Also, over the last year my oil pressure has been slowly diminishing. When it is hot and hot outside it can be around 10psi. Running down the road it is between 15-18psi. I was thinking of running some seafoam through the oil tank at the next oil change and see if it was just a bit gunked up. Any thoughts there?

Thanks for all advice and replies.

There is no adjustments on it unless you have replacement adjustable push rods. Otherwise the Hydralic lifters do their job, and the stock push rods are non adjustable. I am pretty sure the 90 EVO's had the early lifters, and it is probably way past due to change those out to the later "B" lifters. If it was me, I would also install adjustable pushrods at the same time. It will save you having to pull the rocker covers. I am thinking you have the good Torrington cam brg., so that should be no problem.

The 90 should have the B lifters, which came out in '87, I think. However, 50K miles is starting to get to the end of their life, even for B's. Also, the cam could be going bad. If there's a lot of noise and you're concerned about it, a new set of lifters and a cam inspection wouldn't hurt at all. And new adjustable EZ install pushrods at the same time so you don't have to pull the top of the motor off to do it, of course.

My lifters were making some phunny noises. I pulled it apart and found one cam lobe eaten up, #2 intake, if I recall. The lifter had not grenaded (yet). I wouldn't do the sea foam to the oil, but that's just me. Cleaning any gunk out of there isn't going to give you more oil pressure. Your low oil pressure and the valve noises could be related, however. Although you are still well within spec at 10 PSI at idle. These motors just make noises normally, so it can be easy to get over concerned.
