Default Broken Rear Suspension

Yesterday I broke the stud that connects the swingarm to the block that the shocks bolt to. Not sure if I'm explaining that properly but its a 3/4" stud. Sheared it right off where it threads into the swing arm. Anyone else have issues with this before? I'm not sure if I have a stress point due to the new style shocks I installed last year or if 23 years of use finally took its toll on it. Thanks.

You are talking about the square shock mount on top of the swing arm aren't you ? Happens , older high stress bolts like that can work harden and snap at a sudden jolt . You can drill out the center and easyout whats left if you take your time and have the tools . Go slow drill a small pilot hole first then the bigger one with decent drill bits and use lube . PM me if need help no problem .

Sorry should have been more specific. Its an 1988 softail. Wish I had a picture to better explain, but it is on the bottom of the swing arm. I looked at a 1993 today and they have a flat plate with the shock bolted directly to that. Mine has a stud (ready rod) threaded into the swing arm then runs parallel with the bike till it threads into a steel block. This block is what the shocks are mounted to.

Those break a lot , more so if your a big guy and still running the stock shocks . Had a buddy busted one every 2 or 3 months like clockwork , him and his old lady the bike was way past load limit and all it takes is a pothole .

Seen those that's tucked up in there too isn't it ? If it's the same setup I'm thinking about I ended up with a cheapy right angle drill attachment and a carbide burr digging it out . Good luck .
