Pulled my Spark Plugs and......

Just for the heck of it I pulled my plugs on my 93 softail and they were covered in with white ash?

The bike has 10:5 pistons, Woods W6H cam, Python 2:1, Crane Hi-4 with the advance slope setting at 3, heads modified, Mikuni HSR-42 with a 96 jet needle and 165 main. Could I being running to lean? Bad fuel? The bike runs real strong with occasional detonation under extremely hard acceleration. I do use Lucas octane booster when the need arrives...Any input? Thanks in advance.

Some octane boosters leave a residue behind. What plugs are you runnuing??

The plugs are screamin eagle brand gaped at .40. The cheap version....lol

When you bought them are they for the stock bike, if so you need to go one heat range colder for 10.5 compression. The stock plug will be too hot. Hope this helps.

I have similiar mods and I went through a few different brands and heat ranges until I got to the NGK BPR7ES. The BPR5ES is stock so the 7 is 2 steps colder and seem to work the best for me. Mine was so severe I was salting the plugs and timing or jetting would not completely cure it. Octane boost helped some but the 7's have stopped it completeley now.
