Thanks Kabear, and I will be following this thread to see other responses as well. I hope Mountainkowboy does not mind my question here but I would expect him and others to have interest as well, as it relates to his original question somewhat.
I have been using the 63805-80A filters on our 1990 Ultra for the last 65,000 miles with no clearance problems. It really is not very long, I am guessing 4"
I use the long filter on my Low Rider.....same on the previous Sportster and Dyna Convertible.
Standard filter on my Ultra....due to the sensor in the way.
I would say if you have clearance for the long filter....then go for it.
Your filter location allows the longer filter because it is in front of the motor. I also used the long filter (63805-80A) on my 1998 Ultra. It gave a little more oil and filter area.
I did try the long filter on my 1985 FLHTC and 1989 Ultra. I stopped using them when I found scratches on the top of the filter when changing them. I guess they did hit the ground when I went over some curbs and bumps in the road. I just felt it was better not to take any chance on knocking one off.
When I mentioned the Low Rider, Dyna Convertible and Sportster...I guess I was referring to the extra long filter 63813-90. I always thought of this one being the long filter.
63805-80A is used on my Ultra. In my opinion, this filter was the standard size.
63810-80T was the extra short filter. I never used this one....not for sure if Harley even still offers this.
Mine has the 63805-80A on it now in black, dont really see the point of chrome, you cant see it anyhow. I would think that this is the "standard" filter?
Cool, I havent done a fluid change yet, still messing with the electrical. Then a complete fluid change, probably go redline in all three. Save some more pennies and go for the glide pro kit, since it doesent look like anything has been changed in the 77K on the clock.
If you want a longer filter, get one from Toyota for a Lexus LS400, "the V8 filter." Otherwise, as I have said in the past, I use a Toyota filter for a RN Truck (22R motor). They are even black, and ~$5.
