evo upgrades
I've got 46K on my 96 E Glide and am debating on a MoCo Reman or rebuild locally. I don't think the bottom end should be over looked. Any advice for a solo touring engine for the next 50K. I've maybe 10 years left to ride the Road Sofa at 57 now.

Just curious as to why you're considereing a rebuild? Not flaming you but curious. I've got 130k miles on mine w/o a rebuild and it does not smoke or use oil, compression is withn tolerances. It gets regular. loving maintenance. Mines a 95 Ultra . IMHO, you got lots more miles left on the old girl if nothing has been broken and regular maint has been done. Might be more money for chrome or my favorite...trips.

I had one of those "OMG, the oil light is on" experiences earlier this year. Got bad stuck in traffic on a bridge with nowhere to go, except terribly slow. I could have drop to the shoulder, but my wife's trike couldn't fit safely. Got real hot, and had done a thread on 'Oil coolers for Evos or not' in this forum. Been out and back a couple of times and all seems well with the ole gal, but ....
If I want to get a bit more kick in the pants, should I just do some top end and cam work or does the 'marbles in the can' episode really have merit for a rebuild. My first concern is the first 30K undocumented miles by the HD Tech who owned the bike originally. He has relocated and the dealership hasn't records of the first 30K, nope no original owner's manual either. Got told is was there somewhere...by the second owner. He barley rode the gal, but had it serviced and detailed over his two year ownership.
I have stayed by the book with service. I am doing more of my own service to keep it in my garage rather than in theirs for routine maintenance.
I hope to get many more without the need for a major overhaul and I am really satisfied with my stock power, but iffin...
The reman gets me a stock 80" for around $3100.00. New as a bright pin. But... I don't know if the cam bearing was already upgraded in her or anything else and if the moco would would go back to the notorious INA bearing.
I am fine what I got... but it is stock, I think.....

Uhhhhh...I'm 56. I plan on riding until I can't hold the 'glide upright, then either going sidehack or trike.
FLGEEZ, at 47K miles you're not in need of a rebuild if what you're basing the decision on is low oil pressure in that situation. Common. Unless you start hearing the lifters rattle, you've got oil flowing. Even with an oil cooler on my bike, it will drop below 10psi if I get stuck in traffic on a hot (90+) day. The stock lower end runs on roller bearings, unlike an automobile engine. When heat thins out the oil, it doesn't hold pressure like a car does. The only thing you might need at the mileage you've got is a possible topend. If you're not having oil burning issues, a big loss in compression or cylinder leak down....Ride it till it does.
When The MoCo does a Reman on your motor, they return it to stock. Meaning the INA bearing. If you're looking for a bit more oomph, go with the SE air cleaner and a re-jet/tune of the carb. The stock AC is very restrictive to meet EPA noise requirements. Go with a decent pair of slipon mufflers or drill the baffles outta the stock ones. Then consider a cam. For under a grand you can turn the stock 80" EVO into a nice running bike and not lose any reliability/longevity.

Tried the side hack in a training class for threewheels. Don't want to begin to wrestle again that late in life. My love's Trike is my plan B. Convert what I got.

SE ignition, EV27 CAM, Big Radius pipes with half the baffles cut out, rejetted carb with the yost tube, and big sucker air cleaner. Bike runs hard and pulls strong. I only have 12000 miles on it but I can keep up with stock 88 motors easily!!!

All right first phase is complete. Went with a SE ignition,coil,new wires and plugs. It made a noticable difference.
I am thinking a cam is already under the christmas tree. An Andrews EV27 if Santa was doing his job right. Question though I know to replace the bearing with a torrington but is it necassary or required to replace the rods? With the EV27 being a bolt in does it work well with stock rods?

Judging by the mods you've got listed, you aren't going to have to pull the heads off. However if you want to keep the stock rods (which will work) you'll have to pull the heads apart. If you were to go with the adjustable push rods then all you've got to do is cut the old rods out (bolt cutter), install your cam, and install the adjustable rods. The adjustable rods don't require the removal of the heads.
