i was cruising about 35 mph and tried to go to 3rd. gear and found that it would not go into 3-5th. gears, thought i stripped the shifter but had not, took shifter loose and attempted to move shift arm to 3rd - 5th. but it is al the way back and still only goes into 2nd. can i fix this . the tranny is not making any noise runs good in 1st. and 2nd. Help HD brothers 1990 electra glide classic

 

Disconnect the shift linkage rod where it connects to the transmission shift lever, and make sure the shift lever at the transmission has not slipped on the shifter shaft, and that it is tight to the shaft.

How far back is the shift lever going? If it contacts the primary case, it has slipped on the shaft.

 

it doe's go back about to yhat position but the screw that tightens it to the shaft seems tight

 

Try to wobble the lever on the shaft, you may find that it is loose, a very common occurrence.
