That's because your bike is older than most of the parts guys at the dealership.

I have an '89 ultra that I was thinking of doing the reman on. talked to my dealer in manitoba canada and the dealer in grand forks north dakota. they both told me i can pull the motor take it to them and they will send it for the reman. the only thing i don't get is warranty when it is back since they did not do the install. i only buy used bikes anyway so the lack of warranty is not that important to me.

good call. I would trade the warranty for the savings of the labor charges also.

You can get a brand new crate EVO from Harley for less than $3,000, and that would be the way I would go if I needed a new motor. I don't understand the need for more power either as my 99 Softail Custom has way more power than I need. It runs great from low end to 85. With the carb set up right, and a good set of pipes, a stock EVO has plenty of power, and is super reliable. I have 32,000 miles on mine, and it feels like it is just getting broken in. No leaks anywhere. I did change out the cam brg. at 27,000 just for peace of mind. Only took me a day, and I am slow.

The remans from HD come with any updates that were made to that engine. Updated bearing gaskets ect so do worry about that they are fine engines.
They hold up better than most of the ones I have seen bubba build.

Jim,

I know how you feel and what you mean because my old bike is a 99 FXSTC that has an air cleaner, pipes and rejetting. It runs really well and I never felt the need to do anything to it, my neighbor is now riding it. Once or twice a year we switch bikes and both of us notice a big difference, my 94 is still 80" but has a cam, a little head work, carb, aircleaner and pipes...BIG difference and I don't miss the 99 at all.

Doug

That's true. The '94s were notorious for cracked cases, and though mine had no problems with the cases, Harley sent mine back with brand new cases to the latest revision.

On the whole, I'm glad I still have my old Evo. Now, if it would quit raining so I can ride it a bit more before the end of the season....

I felt the same way about mine for 25 years. Couldn't justify tearing into a perfectly good running motor. For the last few years I have had a second bike. First was a 2004 AIH Texas Chopper, now a 2005 AIH LSC, both with the 111 S&S motor. Having 115 hp, compared to the Harley's 47, made the Harley seem kind of like a dog. This year I decided to bump it up, and do some maintenance. I put in KB 9.5 pistons, Andrews EV27 cam, SE pushrods, Harley B lifters, intake/exhaust valves and springs, and a S&S Super E carb. It runs great now, and its ready to run for many more years.
