Default New to Me 86 FLHTC

Hi
REcently picked up a 86 FLHTC from one of my Shovelhead friends. 31,250 in the odometer. Doing routine tune up stuff ie fluids and plugs. I know it needs new fork seals and one of the rocker box gaskets is leaking.
I rebuilt my Shovel from the crank pin out so I am not afraid of a little maintenance.
Like I said biggest issues so far are the gasket and fork seals. I thik I need a new rear exhaust gasket as well so I am going to change both for good measure.
Clock in the dash as well as Oit temp gauge are inop. No Radio and from what I have read this is not an easy fix with that dash.
It has Screaming Eagle slip ons but they are really loud.
Hope to learn alot here and get this dresser back up to 100%.
She does ride like a cadillac though!

Sounds like a lot of fun, and looks like a smooth ride.

Well its mostly for the wife. I ride the Shovel 90% of the time. But I do enjoy getting to add new skills to my mechanical abilities.
Oh forgot to mention before someone points it out, I already have bothe the factory and clymer service manuals plus a parts book.

That's not the original tour pack. Inspect the exhaust crossover tube for cracks. The crossover tube is now unobtainium. An entire exhaust system from a twinky up to about 2007 will fit perfect. Always carry a spare "clutch finger" in the tour pack. Replace the speakers with JBL GTO427's, I think.

I had a shovelhead when I bought mine (new). I was planning on keeping both. I think I put maybe another 300 miles on the shovelhead and said "screw this" and sold it.

Thanks for the advice on the speakers. I need a radio first. I will inspect the crossover as the rear cylinder is where I suspect the leak. I tried looking around with a mirror but so far have found nothing.
So a Twinky exhaust will bolt right up? Thats good to know.
Oh yeah the tour pack is off at the moment, but it will be nice for longer trips.

1986 ... I think it's a good year. Good looking version you got there.

The doc mentioned the clutch finger. I just had mine "wear out" (broke) and posted about it because of an issue with the part not being made by Harley.

Last year it took shocks, an upgraded charging system and a complete overhaul of the ignition system. This year a tranny overhaul and minor throw-out bearing issue, and an odd engine tick. Other than that I put on a new belt and a rear Metzler and improved it's performance last year with a good aftermarket Ignition module.

So best wishes taking care of her ride.

Nice bike you have there. Glad to see another 86 ort so around. I can tell you from personal experience be sure of the build date meaning if it is early or late for alot of parts mechanically, even the passenger floor boards can be different that year mine are not like yours but both are factory.

Yeah, Bill, I have those early rear floor boards as well. Can't find any replacements for them. I think we have to change the swing arm bearing carrier thing to use the later style. Even the factory online parts database doesn't show our style floor boards.

I hear ya, I thought I was lucky in that the local hd parts guy is a die hard evo fan. He just sold a 87 not too long ago. He has squirreled alot of parts back but, he only had one of the rear brackets still, couldnt find the other. I have a line on some just got to take time out to go look.
