I've read your post and I must agree with Ultra89Rider. I have a 1989 FLHTC. I did extensive research on changing the inner and outer fairing to the newer style as I felt just like you that the older fairings is not the most attractive. Anything can be done but it will take a good deal of wiring and fabrication.

Any way I thought as long as long as I was going to change things why would I change to the newer style just to be the same look as a lot of other bikes on the road. I made a plate, had it engraved, and chromed. I mounted a Dakota Digital MCV-7100 Universal instrument center. Dakota Digital sells a mechanical speedometer adapter that your speedometer cable plugs into and outputs an electrical signal to the instrument center. I made up some custom molding, along with rubber mounting the new instrument center. The wiring had to be sliced to the existing wiring harness. I must say it looks unique and I get a lot of compliment on the set up. I've attached pictures. It was a fun project and now I don't have the same set up as any one else. The only restriction is your imagination.

Good job on your setup....looks nice and is definately a one of a kind. What did you do to get the ditital reading for the speedometer?

The digital speedometer reading is from the Dakota Digital information center. They make all types of speedometers, tachometers, and gauges for cars and motorcycles. dakotadigital.com

The unit I have displays a digital speedometer, tachometer, clock, volt meter, fuel level gauge, turn signal indicator, trip meters, odometer, high beam, neutral light. It can be set up and programmed to record 0 to 60 MPH time, 1/4 mile time, last highest R.P.M. - Last highest M.P.H.

Dakota Digital makes direct replacements that are plug and play units for Harley Davidson, but not for the older Harleys. The speedometer I purchased is a generic unit. It actually came with a mounting bracket to mount it to a set of handle bars. I fabricated it to mount to the engraved plate that I made and rubber mounted were my original Harley analog gauges were. The generic units come with a wiring diagram so it's not that difficult to splice the new unit to the existing wiring harness. With the generic units they must be programmed for your set up. For instance they can give readings in in US or metric - M.P.H. or K.M.H.

Are there any companies that make a trim ring set or even some stick on instrument panel trim pieces that split the huge instrument panel cluster into sections? I'm thinking about making some myself but I have so many other projects going on the bike right now that I'd love to just purchase something if anybody knows where I could get it. I've seen some companies that make a sheet of peel-and-stick dash trim and you simply cut it how you want it to fit. Of course I'd much rather have something that I could just peel-and-stick. I lost a lot of my scissor skills after age 9.
