I've been real happy with my Mikuni carb - it really "woke up" my '98 Evo fatboy. My Brother-in-law found a re-man HD and he was happy with it for a few less bucks than my new one. With my old shovelhead, the S&S was the best money I ever spent, but my mechanics (just their opinion) say that S&S isn't what it used to be. I guess it depends on your definition of "breaking the bank". I think my Mikuni was about 300bucks new. Good luck with whatever you decide and report back
The Mikuni HSR42 comes right out of the box setup for a stock through stage one Evo. You can also adjust your idle on the fly (if needed) and the one on my bike has performed flawlessly for years. (And I've messed with these since Harley ran Zenith carbs.)
As for cheapest then probably a used CV Klein carburetor (Harley stock carb) which are all over E-bay for various but reasonable prices.
I'm glad you posted this info. At $200 to mod & rebuild mine I think I'll give him a shot. Plus he's fairly local to me. I read his entire write-up and it sounds like he really knows his ****. A lot of my friends swear by the modded CV's, so there has to be something it. Very cool!
Thanks 2006FLST
