Default 89 FXR trans leak....

I knew I had a trans seal leak on my 89 FXR. So I took it to and independent and got it back and it still leaked. Took it back and he said he fixed it again.....Well I rode it home yet again and sure enough it is still leaking. He said he put dye in the fluid, I went and bought a black light and still see the yellow fluid (under the black light) running down the back side of the inner primary.

Any hints to how this can be fixed? He appears to know what he is doing but I am starting to wonder whats going on.

Its is for sure trans fluid as the primary is red and has no dye.

Hell he may not even replaced the seal I really dont know. But after $200 I would think he should be able to get it fixed.

I would do it myself but really don't know what I am doing as I dont have the tools for this.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Troy

Mate mine will do it a little on a long ride, when I rebuilt the tranny I overfilled it a bit.
Mines coming out the gear selector shaft, there's a seal there that didn't seat or something.

Oh I guess I should have said I can wipe it down and then with in 10 minutes it is running down the case again. This is even if it is cold.

I would have thought when he had it apart he would be checking for leaks between reassembling.

Disregard this post because after I posted I read closer and noticed were you said it was not primary fluid. An inner primary seal will leak primary fluid but it will run down the backside of the inner like you describe. The tranny output seal leak usually runs down between the tranny and pulley. I say usually because there is a quad seal and possibly other things that could go wrong. Anyway below is my edited post that sounded like you were describing an inner primary leak. It may help visual the problem.

It is probably an inner primary seal if it is running down the backside of the inner primary right in line with the pulley. Mine was leaking last summer and I installed the Jims inner bearing upgrade. Its a double ball sealed bearing that runs around 40 dollars and is a drop in replacement for the original but it is a totally different design. Here is a video of some guy running through an inner seal replacement. I would try to use a torque wrench over his air wrench technique but you can get an idea of how easy it is.

Troy your problem is exactley why I do my own work. I have a manual and there is great info on the internet and this and other forums. I think its time to dive in yourself, at least by the time your done you will know nothing has been missed.

There is a small bearing pressed into the case just a few inches in front of the output shaft, if that bearing is cracked or pressed in loose it will leak. I had my mechanic do the same thing, replaced the quadseal more than once and it still leaked, finally saw that small little crack in the bearing, replaced it and now no more leaks.

I believe your referring to the BEARING, INNER RACE, I had replaced this when I rebuilt my tranny. It can be seen on ronnie's harley parts site http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche....hdmc&A=34&B=13 this link won't give you transmission gears for some reason but on the left side just click the link for transmission gears and it is part 6.

Not sure if its the same animal, I have a 96 Electra Glide Classic. I tore mine apart in December to fix the clutch and check out the tranny. I had a tranny leak before as well. When we tore it down we found that a previous machanic had installed the seal that goes around the mainshaft where it comes into the primary (the clutch basket goes through it) was installed backwards and had a crimp in it. Replaced it and now no leak. It was a lot of work, but now I know it is good to go and I learned a lot about my bike. The service manual is worth every penny. The seals and gaskets weren't expensive and I saved a ton of money by doing the work myself.

ok I will give it a shot in a few days, I am sure I can do it just thought after $200 he would have least been able to identify what the hell was leaking. At least he could have told me so we could have went from there when it was a part.

BTW it will be the last time I use him anyway, he stripped one of the outter primary threads and did not even bother to tell me. It was leaking from there after I picked it up. I fixed this with a heil coil so its dry there now.

Thanks for the replies guy, when I get into it if I have ?? I will be back!

Later

The bearing I'm referring to is on the counter shaft, it's not listed on your parts list other than a needle bearing part #21 on the case blowup, but it is referred to as a counter shaft bearing closed end. The way mine got cracked is once when I was taking off the pulley I was trying to loosen up the pulley to pull it off with a large screwdriver behind the pulley and was prying on the pulley and case and didn't realize I was prying on the back of that bearing, the crack was very hard to see, I rode it that way for several years, it only leaked when I left it on the kickstand, and then only a few drops.
