If the clutch hub doesn't slide off easily then yes you should use a puller.

When I pulled my transmission on my 95 the clutch hub didn't slide off easily (it had been in place for 123k miles) but a friend of mine with an 07 had no problems pulling his off by hand.

Wow guys didn't mean to cause a fuss between a couple of you. never the less. I found the proper puller and got it a part. It's not like I am not mechanically inclined, hell I have had Harleys before and rebuilt the motor in them as well a several cars.

Anyway after I got it apart it is leaking at the trans shaft.(which was supposed to have been replaced) It has dye in it and under the black light it is very clear it is leaking at that shaft. Here is the best picture I could get to come out correctly.

there is a puddle under it on the housing.

Is there a improved seal I can use or is the factory seal the one to use?

The Harley seal is just fine but you have to be careful installing it. The best way I found when putting one on my friends bike was to use the deep socket that goes over the transmission shaft to tap it into place.

No problem, there are bound to be disagreements, already forgotten.

In addition to changing the big oil seal, you should also change the pulley spacer and the quad seal under the spacer.

Use new lock bolts for the pulley nut lock.

Another thought...

Your bike appears to have the upgraded pulley/nut/lock/seal/spacer, so make sure they give you the correct replacement parts.

The inside diameter of the big oil seal, the outside diameter and length of the pulley spacer and the size of the quad seal changed.

Take the old parts with you when you get the new stuff.

Harley seal is fine and you will need to make or borrow a tool for removing and retorqing the pulley nut. I made mine up with the proper size socket ( obviously don't remember the size ) and I cut the socket in half and added/welded a piece of 6" pipe big enough to go over the taped up mainshaft back in between both ends of the socket.

On the 5 speed, the pulley nut is 1-7/8", and it is a left hand thread.

So after getting the socket nut it is apparent he did not replace the seal. Well I say that but I think not. Looks like he just put RTV on it to me. I ask myself why if it needed a $15 sleeve he would not tell me while he was in it??

When I pulled it apart it did notice the sleeve is scored and needs to be replaced.

Here is a crazy thing. I went to get a new seal and the seal HD shows was too small on the inside diameter. OS was fine. So I ordered the new sleeve and wouldn't you know they remachined this piece. Just NUTZ I tell you. Why in the hell would they go to all the trouble to redesign this part after all these years.

Any way I am alittle confused about this. The sleeve is taller than the original. Have a look at the picture, Seems this will all work just seems a little off to me as to why they would do this. Seems to me this will offset the belt pully pushing the belt outward.

It just does not seem to be correct part, as the belt pully is now only a portion on the shaft.

Is there two different parts?

Any thoughts?

I am going to hold off before l put it all back together.

I would go back in with your old parts and match them up with new ones.

Parts books are not always correct. It is also possible the parts guy just gave you the wrong parts. (That has happened to me way more than once.)

I have found it is always best to take in the old parts to avoid confusion.
