Alright a quick questions for you carb gurus out there. I'm currently running a Super E with jet sizes:
Main .072
Intermediate .0295
I have a lot of popping under deceleration, but not when at an idle and snapping throttle. I have an EV27 cam, stock heads, stock bore. My exhaust is Paughco upswept drag 1 3/4" with torque cones. What would you suggest I change my jets too to help with my popping and get the best performance out of my set up? Another bit of info is I am at sea level.
How long have you had this carb on your bike and how long has it been doing this? Seems to me more likely you have an air leak in the exhaust or inlet side, rather than a carb problem.
I agree with grbrown. The jetting you have sounds just about dead on, or exactly what I would run on that setup. To me it sounds like either an intake or exhaust gasket leak. With the bike running, have you shot a bit of WD40, or carb cleaner at the intake manifold? If you rev it up, and look closely where the pipes meet the heads, do you see little wisps of smoke that might be coming from the exhaust ports? Thats where I would start first. Then of course the dumb stuff like is the carb just plain loose, the air filter black and clogged, ect... but those jets seem pretty darn close.
I'll recheck for leaks while I'm at work today. The carb has been on my bike since August 2011, but my bike has been torn down and parked while I was rebuilding this winter so honestly probably only has about 200 miles with carb on it. I'll recheck the bolts and what not, I just put new intake seals, and exhaust gaskets on as well, I'll double check those and post an update
I have the same carb, jets, and cam, with 9:5 to 1 pistons and V&H big radius 2 into 2, with the strait thru baffles. If I have the baffles in, all is well on the de-cel, with them removed, I get a lot of reverberation and poping on the de-cel, so it could be what grbrown said, or it could be your pipes, need a little something, something to calm your deceleration down.
Update: I hooked it up to my smoke machine at my work (I'm a auto mechanic) and no leaks out the exhaust or the intake. I took it on another ride and I think I might just be paranoid. There is the occasional pop but mostly just exhaust noise on deceleration. Occasionally I hear a cough out the carb. An I just being to paranoid, after all this is my pride and joy
Sorry one more thing... I pulled the air cleaner to gain access to my vacuum port on the intake and a small amount (very small) of oil was hanging out in housing, is this okay? I know in cars a small amount is acceptable
That's probably all it is, I love the sound my pipe make on the de-cell with the baffles out, but it's just a little to loud for daily driving around here
And yes, the oil is normal, I run a hose from the vent tubes in the head; down to the bottom of the bike, instead of to the air cleaner, because my air cleaner housing was always dripping oil after a long ride.
