Hi, just had the ammeter in garage for ages and just thought it might look good and keep a check on battery, What you call a voltage gauge in the usa is it what we in the uk call voltage meter? if so do you know how to connect one of these to a 1992 fxlr?
thanks dave.

Hook the + lead to a hot wire on the ignition, and the other lead to ground..
The voltmeter gauge monitors the condition of the battery and the alternator. It will show the voltage the alternator is putting out to charge the battery. Watching the voltmeter will tell if the battery is starting to go bad. A battery will put out over 12 volts even with one or more bad cells, however the amperage will decline dramatically. Amperage is what is needed to start the engine. By watching the voltmeter at the same time the starter is engaged, you can see if the voltage drops to 10 volts or less. If so, it has a bad cell and needs to be replaced before it causes problems. If the voltmeter only shows around 12 volts or less when the engine is running the alternator is bad and not charging and the engine is running strictly on the battery. If the voltmeter shows a high 16 volts or higher, the regulator in the alternator is bad and will burn up the lights and could possibly burn the wiring.

It can be done but why ?
As explained above , a voltmeter will tell you what you need to know about the charging systems condition.
You can purchase a " smart " voltage meter now for approx. $ 15.00 that will alert you by a beep and or a blinking light to let you know that your charging system is failing .
To install an actual ammeter you must wire it directly and in series to the battery which means a hot and nasty way to torch your bike if a short developes .
Go with the above !
