I dont believe that the ignition is stock anymore, there is no module on the side of the steering neck, but I could be wrong. I didnt know what the VOES did and am cleaning up all the systems on the bike and wanted some opinions.
I take it you are working on a California bike. Mine was originally a California bike and one of the first things I did was pull the carbon canister off. The only vent line I have is coming off the right tank. I found out the hard way that the vent is necessary for my bike. It lets air back into the gas tank so that there is no vacuum created when gas is run through the carb. You could probably do away with this line if you put on a vented gas cap.

I have owned my 1990 FLHS from new and changed the stock ignition module for a Crane, to get better advance curves, but kept the VOES. I later stroked the same motor, changed carb, but kept the same ignition module plus VOES. Later on I changed to a third carb, still used the VOES!

Then one day, far from home, the bike started playing up, big time. It was fine while riding at a decent speed, but a bitch at slow speeds and pulling away. Proved to be a split in the VOES tube. Ran sweet as a nut after replacing it!

I've run stock, cop and crane ignitions on evos and the voes allows for better tuning for operation under a wider range of operation

On my 1990 FLHS it's a large black thing about the size of a cigarette packet, strapped to the fork leg, out of sight behind the beautiful headlight fairing/nacelle/binnacle thing. Turn the forks to full lock and you should be able to see it (mine's on the right leg). If there is nothing there someone has changed to a different module. If you find it you'll wonder how you missed it!

Graham, I think that is your turn signal cancellor attached to your right fork leg. The ignition module should be on the left side of the frame, near the triple trees.

You may have a internal nose cone ignition.

Follow the wire from the V.O.E.S., should lead you to the ignition module.

If you just disconnect the VOES it will keep the timing retarded, unless you ground the wire that goes to the ign. module. But if you ground that wire, it will be in the advanced mode all the time, which is not good either. You can tell if it is working by pulling the vacuum line off at the carb when it is idling. If it drops rpm it is working. I have a switch wired in between the VOES and the module just for fun, so that at idle I can switch it off and drop my idle down to get a really nice potato potato out of it. I don't know what Sportster you ignition would be off of, but even my old 84 Iron Head Sporty had a VOES on it.

Having said all of that, I believe there are a few aftermarket ignitions that do not use a VOES.

Nope....no module on the plate on the neck, will open the nose cone and see whats in there.
