My question is if you have to ask what tools are you really going to do anything? AAA card and a cell phone.

Cell phone and phone a friend!! It seems that you never have the right thing when you need it. The group I rode with in NY all carried different stuff. So when the rare time came we usually had the right part.

The universal old skool repair kit. Coat hangers and duct tape. OOPs that for a car. Probably a few handtools, piece of electical wire, and the cell px/ credit card.

This was a good thread on tools. For all the guys who say cell phone and credit card, there are still plenty areas of this country with no cell sevice. Plus plenty of times when it will be difficult to get help.

Well, I'm an old school Bow-tie fan and those were the fix-alls for those.

That's what I'm talking about. I'm sure it's changed, but the last time I traveled hwy 60 in east of Phoenix through AZ and NM, I had very spotty cell service at best.

+1 on a cell phone and friend, plus cash / credit card.

I used to be on a forum that ( should you choose to participate ) you could list your phone number and location for a fellow wheeler to lend a hand. We were off roading so mostly it was a a pull out or a dry place to fix your rig a few laughs and get back on the road.

( off road guys are the few that smile when they see rain, which meant there was mud to be had )

I guess proper pre-trip maintenance would be the answer. And I do have recovery service with my insurance. I have no idea what the OEM tool kit would contain, because I've never seen one.
I'm just used to working on everything, so I try to be prepared when I go on a trip. I hate "new" and I hate payments, so pretty much everything I own is older. The newest car I've ever had is a '95 Saturn. Still have it too. But in a car or truck, tools are all I take because you can't swing a dead cat without hitting an O'Reilly's or Auto Zone. But Harley parts are a bit harder to come by in BFE.
I see from the above post that a spare pushrod is good; in point of fact, i had one develop a bad end on a high speed run ('84 softtail) -i had to drive 300 miles to get one. On my '92 FLHTP (gotta put something in the trunk),I think a copy of your wiring diagram, a small multi-meter, a roll of 12 gauge wire and some study for troubleshooting (no start, and charging system issues) is good. Definitely a spare set of spark plugs. Some type of flat repair kit (I like the screw-in plugs, never had any luck with the automotive type)http://www.ventura-mca.com/products/gryypkits.aspx, and a small air pump. A new product called "Ride On" is a good flat preventative, with the side benefit of balancing your tires (who likes ugly weights on their wheels);http://www.ride-on.com/motorcycles.html . A good flashlight, definitely. A spare electronic ignition (I use Crane Hi-4); they're easy to change. The usual baling wire, tape and Dykes or wire cutters. The usual wrench and allen key assortment. the Torx wrench for your rotor bolts. Possibly a inner tubeas a last resort. A charger setup for your cell phone. Some whiskey, for "medicinal" purposes. But, if ur powered by money like so many on here, a "couple Gold Cards, wrapped in 20 c notes" would work, also (LOL).

If we were to carry everything I've seen recommended, there would be no space for luggage.

You guys have it too easy! When visiting Hungary in May of last year, there were NO Harley dealers in some of the countries we rode through and a cell phone is no use if you don't speak the language! Have seen Czech or Hungarian written down?!

On a metric Continent, all the inch spanners is most important. It's almost pointless carrying spares IMHO on a truly long trip.

It all depends on how much you are comfortable attempting to repair !

Several threads on here that may help: search tools, tool kits, road trips, etc.

Here's one for an example...

My buddies say I carry too much, but they are always glad when I have and they need it !!

A bit of baling wire, piece of coat hanger, duct tape, electrical tape, zip ties and a Spirit Bell....
